"Although they hail from Massachusetts, high school chums Goodbye Sluggo sound like a band that I, a Pennsylvanian, would have loved to have grown up with. See, to me, the band strikes a balance between The Loved Ones and Atom and His Package. Maybe it’s the mix of power chords and synthesizers, or gravelly and nasally vocals. Or maybe it’s because, like The Loved Ones and good ol’ Adam Goren, Goodbye Sluggo is pretty gosh darn good.

"Naming their album "Frampton Comes Alive" scores a few big points in my book (like a gazillion). Their sound, while not dated, garners comparisons to 90's alternative bands like Dinosaur Jr., Catherine Wheel, and of course The Replacements’ shimmering pop punk sound. Goodbye Sluggo has done what most bands try for, but sometimes lose sight of: They've written a record about love, loss, and all the stuff (funny and sad) that happens in-between. They created something of quality that will withstand the test of time, rather than some whinny burst of emotion that will disappear after a few months when the next "it" band does the same thing under a different name. Я не являюсь любителем электронных вставок в панк роке. Слушаю, но не фанат... Goodbye Sluggo показывают на собственном примере как правильно использывать синтезаторы. Группа просто замечательная! Они выпустили определенно один из лучших релизов 2008-го года... уж настолько звучат незаезжено и свежо, что не влюбиться в них просто невозможно. Для меня вообще загадка, почему у такого чудесного коллектива меньше 500 прослушиваний на ластфм. Так вот, еще раз об их звучании, кхм, ну это как бы панк рок среднего запада смягченный электроникой, но не утративший при этом своей привлекательности. 

Мой совет - не пропустите!

Sleep Comes Down [emo, pop punk, USA]

Wisconsin's Sleepcomesdown (formerly called both Fairview and Fairview Drive) were initially inspired to start playing music together at the suggestion of local Christian pop-punk group Hangnail, so it was unsurprising that the guys originally took sonic cues from bands like them. Comprised of vocalist/bassist Kristofer Taylor (aka Chris Taylor), guitarist/vocalist Dan Strash, drummer Dan Grasso, and guitarist Ryan Strash, Sleepcomesdown concentrated on playing local shows while steadily honing their rock into something that looked more to the Cure and Psychedelic Furs than MxPx. Following the recording of their album Wax Romantic, Sleepcomesdown signed to Uprising Records and replaced Ryan Strash with new guitarist Dan Dahlberg. The label subsequently released the record in August 2003. A lineup change came about in October 2004, which consisted of remaining founding members Taylor and Dan Strash hooking up with guitarist Steve Ruppa and drummer Tim Feret, former members of Midwest outfits Notaword and Polymer. With the member overhaul came another musical one as well, and Sleepcomesdown's new, somewhat atmospheric rock drew from a combination of influences like Sonic Youth, Unwound, Shiner, My Bloody Valentine, Blonde Redhead, and Jawbox. Furthering their more experimental direction was the addition of fifth member and "electro whiz kid" Dylan Zocchi in March 2007. The newly configured Sleepcomesdown then debuted on wax with the album Secret Handshake, self-released by the band that fall.

The band was active from late 1998 through May 2003. During that time we met a lot of great people and had a tremendous amount of fun. To all who supported us throughout the years we truly thank you.

Еще одна группа, о которой практически ничего не известно. Они из Штатов, играли с 98 по 2003 и записали один альбом (как минимум). Но кого волнуют факты биографии, если музыка крутая? - А она крутая. В лучших традициях мелодичного поп панка того времени... Мелодии вгрызаются в сердце, вокал не дребезжит в ушах, скорости не запредельные, но их вполне хватает. 
Любители должны по достоинству оценить этих ребят.

Caustic Soda [emo, punk rock, Australia]

Caustic Soda formed in late 1994, the result of two school friends finding a drummer through an ad in Missing Link, Melbourne's seminal record store. One year later they had played through bar brawls, wowed fans in Australia's burgeoning underground punk scene, recorded a debut cd in a friend's house, and played a set for 10,000 wedged between Bikini Kill and Rancid. Often compared to their heroes, Jawbreaker, Bad Religion, Snuff, but possessing a style of shouty, scrappy, brooding punk rock all of their own, the band continued through a second full-length, a 7", and countless compilation appearances, before disbanding in mid-1999 when just on the verge of something big. Donnie (vocals/guitar) and Lachlan (drums) continued on that promise with Blueline Medic, which Donnie still plays in to this day as well as performing solo regularly, whilst Jeremy (vocals/bass) moonlighted briefly in short-lived emo/hardcore outfit Rushmore and records under the name The Pieces Fit. These days punk bands all follow the 12-step guide to success, but Caustic Soda revelled in the underground, shunning press kits, demoing and schmoozing, in favour of one-take recordings and gutsy live performances.

Многие впервые услышали об этой команде благодаря культовому сборнику Short Music for Short People, я не исключение. Должен заметить, что песня Caustic Soda там была одной из лучших, на мой взгляд. После нее конечно же захотелось познакомиться с творчеством группы ближе. Эти ребята из Австралии и успешно музицировали с 94 года. Играли мрачноватый (хотя и не всегда) панк рок с серьезными вкраплениями эмо. Вокал хриплый и скорости в основном средние, хотя есть и более быстрые песни. Ну, думаю, группы, указанные в инфлюэнсах довольно точно характеризуют то, как они звучат. В 99-м году распались и двое бывших участников образовали Blueline Medic.

Очень толковая калифорнийская команда, играющая отличный, довольно разноплановый панк рок (смотрим инфлюэнсы). На данный момент в коллективе лишь два постоянных участника и они находятся в процессе записи нового альбома. Партии баса для этого релиза записывал некий Gregg Sartiano, который еще и сводит альбом, за барабанами находился Brooks Wackerman из Bad Religion. Такие вот дела. Судя по трекам на оффсайте, новый лонгплей должен быть просто великолепным. Ну а пока что можно скачать и послушать их предыдущую работу:

37 Slurp [pop punk, skate punk, USA]

37 Slurp consisted mainly of drugs, alcohol, underage girls, partial nudity, and mocking washed up actors, sports icons, and musicians. During their three years of exsitence they could've been found spreading their craptacular brand of punk rock through out the tri-state area by way of a 1990 Buquick Century. Three of the songs above we're on their one and only full length CD, When Things Go Wrong. The other song, "Time" was recorded at Skylab Studios in June 2003 and never saw the light of day. Although they have now gone their separate ways, they unfortunately still continue to make music. 
Joe has a new band called I Know The Struggle. Joe and Mac played with the band Break Away, but are no longer together. Mac is busy doing some solo work. 
Chris and Verd started a band called The Pennant Race, but are no longer together. They have just put a new myspace and may be reuniting for a few shows very soon. They have also played together in Hartford, The Whale.

Почему-то люблю группы с цифрами в названии. А если это команда из Нью Джерси второй половины 90-х - начала 00-х, играющая скоростной, драйвовый, беззаботный, угарный поп-панк, то тут вообще без вариантов. 37 Slurp записали лишь один полноформатный лонгплей, после которого распались. Бывшие участники образовали несколько новых команд, среди которых лично мне знакома только одна - Break Away.

Судя по песне Washington Square Park, альбом будет более вдумчивым и серьезным нежели
предидущие их работы. И таких нелепых текстов, а-ля "everyday we eat toothpaste and we pretend we like its' taste", нa нем не будет. Не знаю, право, хорошо ли это. Время покажет

Based on Washing Square Park, I can tell it will be more serious and intelligent piece.

And there will be no more ridicilous lyrics such as "everyday we eat toothpaste and we pretend we like its' taste". Time will tell if it'll turn out well for the band.

A Day To Remember came #23

Будем постить тут новости о панк роке и около того, под тэгом "news".

Итак. Модные полу-факеры A Day to Remember оказались на 23 месте чартов ласт.фм Best of 2009 Нахожу этот факт весьма забавным, особенно учитывая тот факт, что вместе с ними в чарте находятся инди-группы в женских обтягивающих штанах, Ганс энд Роузес и мать их U2!!
Их альбом Homesick был прослушан более 4.5 миллионов раз, почти 400-ми тысячами преданными поклонниками. Такой вот он, панк рок :)

I find this pretty funny escpecially if you'll look closely at the bands they share chart with: so called "indie" bands from major labels, wearing tight-ass girly pants, Guns and Roses and fucking U2!

Their 2009 LP Homesick have been scrobbled 4.6 million times by 374 thousands of loyal fans.

Endless Summer [melodic punk / Russia]

Молодая, развивающаяся группа из Нижнего Новгорода. Была образована летом 2007 года. Состав участников часто менялся, вместе с тем менялся и саунд группы, но ориентиром всегда оставалась быстрый мелодичный панк рок. Стабильности в составе удалось добиться только зимой 2009 года, после чего группа вскоре начала концертную деятельность. Ребята играли на одной сцене с такими группами как Jet Market (Италия), Bedtime For Charlie (Италия), Hogwash (Франция), AnyWay! (Минск), I'm So Maniac (Ростов-на-Дону), Trick Shots (Владимир), Паразиты (Нижний Новгород), также отыграли один концерт в Казани.
